A total of 1,414 students with autism are currently enrolled across Fiji’s education system.

The update was shared as Fiji joined the global community in observing World Autism Awareness Day under the theme, “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value.”

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive education, saying that efforts are ongoing to ensure that all children with autism are identified and supported in schools.

He said that progress has been made, with 214 inclusive schools and 18 special schools currently operating.

However, he stresses that some children remain unidentified, making early detection and outreach a key priority.

Radrodro says that to strengthen support, the Ministry will roll-out nationwide awareness programmes and targeted teacher training, particularly in the Central Division, to improve early identification and classroom assistance.

The Ministry is also working closely with organisations such as the Pacific Autism Centre to provide specialised interventions in schools.

He further says that government support continues through the $500 Special and Inclusive Education Grant and the $250 Free Education Grant, aimed at assisting students with autism and other learning needs.

The Minister urges parents, teachers, and communities to reject stigma and misinformation, saying every child deserves equal opportunity.

The Ministry also remains committed to building an inclusive education system that ensures every learner, regardless of ability, is given the support they need to succeed.
