Moana Pasifika assistant coach Stephen Jones has been granted an early release to return to the United Kingdom, where he will take up a role with Red Bull-backed English Premiership club Newcastle.

The former Wales international has been appointed assistant coach at Newcastle.

Stuff.co.nz reports that after two years in New Zealand, he says the opportunity to move closer to his family was too good to turn down.

Jones says he loved his time with Moana Pasifika.

He says learning about the culture and customs, and seeing the players grow not just on the field but as people, was a highlight of his experience.

Jones adds that the Moana Pasifika movement is something truly special—an experience he has never had before and he will cherish the memories.
