Fiji Higher Education Commission Chairman, Steve Chand

Some institutions that have been operating without registering with the Fiji Higher Education Commission have been identified and referred to the court.

This has been highlighted by the Fiji Higher Education Commission Chairman Steve Chand who says any institution that decides to offer post-secondary awards without proper registration is liable for prosecution.

Chand also urges people to ensure that before registering with any institution, it must be registered with the Fiji Higher Education Commission.

He says any person who operates a higher education institution that is neither a university nor a degree-awarding institute of technology in contravention of subsection (1), commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of $20,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a body corporate or imprisonment for a term of 5 years for an individual or a director for a body corporate or to both such fine and imprisonment.

There are about 51 institutes registered under the Commission including, the Fiji National University, the University of the South Pacific and the University of Fiji.
