With about a week away from Fiji Day, Narain Sharma and his family are an example of national unity as his family held a cara sala ceremony to reconnect with their ancestral roots as his great grandfather Ratu Timoci Salabogi Kapawai was adopted by the Gonesau clan in Nabukadra, Ra during the Girmit era.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Sharma says his grandfather who was previously named Bihari was renamed and even entered into the Vola ni Kawa Bula by Ratu Mara Salabogi, a high-ranking iTaukei pastor.
He says even after a hundred years, their connection with the iTaukei community never faded.
Sharma says they grew up speaking their language, going to their schools and says their bond with the iTaukei people is deep and personal.
He says though the cara sala has taken place a century later, their hearts were never far from their Fijian roots.
Sharma says that faith and cultural identity are not barriers to unity, and highlighted the importance of living harmoniously in Fiji while respecting diverse backgrounds.
