The new Security Industry Decree 2010 will regulate the registration, licensing, and operations of Security Companies and personnel in Fiji.
Fiji previously had no laws to regulate the Security Industry.
The decree will provide for the regulation, licensing, control and monitoring of the activities of private security companies and their personnel through the Security Industry Licensing and Registration Board.
One of the main functions of the Board will be to determine applications for the grant of security licenses.
Under the decree there are three classifications of licenses, being a master licence, individual licence and a provisional licence.
The holder of the Master license may patrol, protect, watch or guard any property, act as a bodyguard, act as a crowd controller, bouncer, patrol and protect or guard any property with the assistance of a dog, patrol and guard any property including doing so while carrying on monitoring centre operations.
The Individual license holder may act as a consultant for identifying and analyzing security risks, sell security equipment, product advice in relation to such equipment, act as a locksmith and to sell, install, maintain, repair or service security equipment, sell, install, maintain, and repair or service electronic security equipment.
As for the Provisional License the holder may act as a bodyguard or to provide close personal protection, act as a crowd controller or bouncer, patrol, protect, watch or guard any property with the assistance of a dog, and guard any property including carrying on monitoring centre operations.
The Decree came into effect on the 19th of last month.
