Five members of the Prasad family are homeless after a fire destroyed their rental home on Tiri Road, Nadawa.

The family including Sanjay Prasad, his wife Archana, their two daughters and Sanjay's mother-in-law were renting the house for four months.

The fire started from a room where a diya was lit for prayers.

While speaking to fijivillage, Sanjay Prasad says the fire broke out around 10:30am.

He says at that time, his wife, mother-in-law and niece were inside the house while he was at work and their daughters were at school.

Prasad says despite his 65 year old mother-in-law being a stroke patient, she miraculously survived.

His wife, Archana suffered burns while trying to save their 2 year old niece and was rushed to Valelevu Hospital.

She is now discharged.

The firefighters managed to control the fire from spreading to other houses.

Sanjay Prasad also says this is the second time tragedy has struck his family, revealing that last year they lost a $70,000 workshop to a fire.

He says this new incident has left the family grieving and devastated.
