The dreams of countless families, market vendors, and commuters in Seaqaqa will soon become a reality, as the new Seaqaqa Market and Bus Stand is set to be completed by the end of next year.
The Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of the long-awaited $1.7 million project yesterday.
He says this project is not just about turning the soil—it is about turning a dream into reality.
He adds that it is a moment that reflects the hope, resilience, and determination of the people of Seaqaqa and the surrounding communities, reassuring them that their voices have been heard and their needs matter.
The Minister noted that vendors and small business owners have worked in difficult conditions for several years, and that the new development will provide them with a safe, modern, and dignified space in which to thrive.
He emphasised that this project is more than just infrastructure—it is about investing in livelihoods, creating opportunity, and building a future where rural and peri-urban communities are not left behind, but are uplifted and empowered.
The Seaqaqa Market will include space for 50 vendors, with dedicated sections for fresh produce, yaqona, handicrafts, a well-designed fish market, and there will also be accessible sanitation facilities, showers, and amenities for persons with disabilities.
The new bus stand will enhance daily travel for commuters and bring greater convenience to the people of Seaqaqa and surrounding areas, and it will feature secure vendor parking, a drop-off zone, administrative offices, and attractive landscaping.
The Ministry has also secured a development lease for Phase Two, directly opposite the site, for the construction of a new Council office, public car park, and seven commercial lots, which will create further opportunities for the community.
