A resident of Savusavu has raised concerns about individuals living in Public Rental Board flats who earn more than $500 a week.
While speaking during the Fijian Media Association Meet the Public and the Press Town Hall event in Savusavu, Vimlesh questioned what the government is doing regarding the eligibility criteria for those applying for housing and how assessments are being carried out.
He claims that some of these tenants include taxi proprietors, canteen owners, and individuals who can afford to own and park two cars in front of the PRB flats.
He also highlighted that, in primary school, students are taught the basics of needs and wants, and shelter is a basic human need.
He adds that many poor families still lack proper housing, and this issue must be addressed.
While responding to the same issue in Labasa, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad says there is always abuse in any system, and there are people who got into PRB flats who should not be there.
Professor Prasad says he hopes the PRB is looking into it and putting in policies so that there is no abuse.
He also highlighted that PRB flats are specially designed for lower-income families, and that is where it should be directed.
