After concerns were raised by a Wailea Settlement community leader about the flooding situation in their area, the Suva City Council says they have engaged the Wailea Women’s Group, who have taken the initiative for some time now to keep the Wailea bin areas clean without seeking assistance.
SCC Acting CEO, Tevita Boseiwaqa says in recognition of their ongoing commitment, the Council has formally engaged them under their community engagement initiative.
Boseiwaqa says as part of this arrangement, the group has been allocated the responsibility of cleaning the Wailea Creek and the main drain, with the Council providing financial support directly to them rather than outsourcing to contractors.
He says this approach promotes local ownership and ensures that community members benefit directly.
The Acting CEO says importantly, the current engagement with the Women’s Group does include youths from Wailea, and together the team has already completed cleaning approximately 900 metres of drains and creek in the area.
He adds the Council remains committed to supporting the Wailea community and continues to encourage groups who demonstrate initiative and accountability.
