Methodist Church of Fiji Secretary for Communications Reverend Wilfred Regunamada.

Methodist Church of Fiji Secretary for Communications, Reverend Wilfred Regunamada says he has been working with young people for 9 years now and he has seen their lives being ruined due to pornography.

Reverend Regunamada says there is a norm with many young people where they can openly share photos and videos in various chat groups.

He says he has seen young people struggle academically, unable to achieve their sporting dream and go in and out of marriages due to porn addiction.

Reverend Regunamada says he has been very passionate about this issue ever since working as a chaplain at Ratu Kadavulevu School for 5 years and the various cases that came to him about children facing sexual harassment.

He says his religious education classes will always have a pornography topic.

Reverend Regunamada says addiction to porn takes people to such a stage where they view other people from a pornographic point of view.

He says he recently counseled a young boy at school who no longer sees his aunt as an aunt and he is afraid that soon he may not look at his mother the same way.

Reverend Regunamada adds he just visited a village in Tailevu where they married two children in Year 11 because the girl got pregnant.

He adds people who are addicted to porn are not bad people but are just struggling and need help.

Reverend Regunamada says one major problem in Fiji is that people do not share these kind of issues because of the cultural norms that are in place.

He says one area the Methodist Church is looking at is Nanuku Settlement in Vatuwaqa where there are a lot of issues and people including the church are turning a blind eye to it.

Reverend Regunamada adds some people can be healed if they just share their stories.
