Reece wary of competition from wingers for All Blacks selection

Fiji-born and Crusaders winger Sevu Reece has admitted that he needs to up his game if he wants to have a chance of making it into the All Blacks squad for the upcoming July tests series and the Rugby Championship.

With the Crusaders on the verge of moving to the top spot in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific points table, Reece is focusing on his game to try and help his team get that top spot, but also on the same note, he will be trying to impress the All Blacks selectors and make a statement that he still has what it takes to be in the squad.

The former Queen Victoria School student says the All Blacks are lucky with the depth they have got with wingers, with players like Caleb Tangitau, Kini Naholo, and Emoni Narawa to name a few.

Reece says everyone is competing at that high level, and even himself too.

He says most of the time when he sees those players playing, he tells himself that he needs to up his game.

He adds if he is not scoring tries, he is trying to be consistent with his performances on attack and defence, being a big asset to the team and just doing his job really well.

Reece further says it is not long now until the All Blacks squad is going to be named, but at the end of the day, he can just control what he can control, and all other than that is out of his control.

He says it is up to the coaches who they go for, and it keeps players on the edge of their seats every day they show up to training, knowing it is not just for the All Blacks but just for their Super teams.

Reece says the Crusaders had a shocking season last year so for him, his priority is the Crusaders, and if the All Blacks come, it comes, but if it doesn’t, he will head further south to Invercargill.

He says all in all, the dream and the goal is to always play for the All Blacks.

Meanwhile, Reece has been named alongside George Bower to start for the Crusaders that will take on the Highlanders in the Battle of the South Island at 7.05 tonight in Christchurch in round 15 of the Super Rugby Pacific.
