Rakiraki Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, George Shiu Raj says all protocols set by the Permanent Secretary for Health are being followed by the people of Rakiraki Town.

He says people are social distancing, wearing masks properly and the careFIJI app is also being checked or their contact details are being registered in the shops that are open.

Raj says only essential businesses such as supermarkets and restaurants are open.

He adds that about 40 police officers and 36 military personnel have been deployed to Rakiraki who are controlling the situation.

Raj has also raised concerns about people in the containment areas of Naria, Volivoli, and Nanukuloa as they have not been able to leave their community in more than two weeks. However, he says the government has supplied food rations to these residents.

Meanwhile, Volivoli Advisory Councillor, Divendra Prasad says they have enough food rations to sustain them for three weeks.

He says fishermen have not been able to sell their catch and get money but they do have enough food.

Prasad says if people have a need then he gets them assistance through the Social Welfare Department.

He adds residents are following the Ministry of Health’s directives as they are aware that lives are at risk and those found not to be following the law will be taken to task.
