Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has reaffirmed that schools cannot impose compulsory charges for student enrolment, following reports that a Suva based school requested $250 per child.
Radrodro shared this in Parliament in response to the question from Opposition MP Hem Chand on ensuring schools do not levy parents and students for enrolment.
He says that these guidelines state that no payment should be required for a child to enter school, consistent with Fiji’s free education policy for Years 1 to 13.
In response, the Minister says the matter involving the specific school is still being discussed, with a focus on ensuring that no parent or student is disadvantaged.
Radrodro describes the $250 request as a voluntary contribution, not an enrolment fee.
He adds that the Ministry continues to monitor schools nationwide to ensure payments are not used as a condition for admission.
