Position of Commissioner of Police likely to be advertised very soon – AG

Qiliho resigns

Attorney General and member of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Graham Leung confirms that the position of the Commissioner of Police will now be advertised following Sitiveni Qiliho’s resignation.

When asked by fijivillage News on when will the Police Commissioner's vacancy be advertised by the Commission, Leung says that is an administrative detail being managed by the secretariat.

He says it will most likely be very soon.

fijivillage News has received confirmation that Qiliho had received legal advice from his lawyers, Devanesh Sharma and Gul Fatima of R Patel Lawyers in relation to his resignation.

Qiliho had remained the suspended Commissioner of Police despite being convicted of abuse of office in the USP matter and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment in May this year as the Commission was awaiting the independent tribunal’s decision on whether Qiliho’s conviction should be seen as misbehaviour.

Many had asked the question how and why Qiliho remained the suspended Police Commissioner as he is now serving a prison sentence, and this has also resulted in the Commissioner’s position not getting advertised or filled by the Constitutional Offices Commission.

When questioned by fijivillage News last week on what is being done about this, Prime Minister and Chair of the Commission, Sitiveni Rabuka said the Commission was waiting for the tribunal to come back after being given the added responsibility on whether the conviction is sufficient for Qiliho to lose his job.
