Team Fiji Women’s Rugby 7s side had a disappointing start to their Paris Olympic 7s campaign after losing to Canada 17-14 in their first pool match.

Canada started strong, with Florence Symonds and Charity Williams scoring a try each to put them in a 12-0 lead.

The Fijiana 7s team committed a lot of mistakes and could not score a point in the first half of the match.

The second half saw Fiji’s Maria Rokotuisiga running away and scoring Fiji’s first try to close the gap to a 12-7 game.

Canada responded through a try to Keyara Wardley to put them 12 points clear.

Laisani Likuceva scored Fiji’s second try in the final minutes but it was not enough to give them the win.

Fiji will meet China at 7am today before playing New Zealand at 2.30am tomorrow in their final pool match.

In other results, Great Britain beat Ireland 21-12, Australia thumped South Africa 34-5, the USA defeated Japan 36-7 and France beat Brazil 26-0.

The women’s quarter finals kick off at 7am tomorrow, while the semi finals start at 1.30am on Wednesday.

The women’s final is at 5.45am Wednesday.
