No environmental damage detected following Walu Bay fuel leak

Swift action by Government authorities has prevented environmental damage following a fuel leak at an industrial facility in the Walu Bay area earlier this morning.

Joint inspections were carried out by the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Health after the incident was reported.

Government has confirmed that containment measures were immediately activated, with the leaked fuel safely directed into the facility’s bund and separator pit to prevent further spread.

Fuel transfer operations were subsequently completed to reduce tank levels and allow for permanent repairs to be carried out.

Site safety throughout the operation was supported by the National Fire Authority.

Government says inspectors observed limited traces of fuel overflow within the immediate site area.

They say these traces are currently being addressed through a controlled clean-up process under close regulatory supervision.

Authorities have also conducted drone surveillance over the Walu Bay drainage network and surrounding riverine system, which confirmed that there has been no discharge of fuel into nearby waterways.

They say at this stage, there are no observed impacts on marine life or the surrounding riverine environment.

However, monitoring will continue as a precautionary measure.

The facility operator has been directed to bear all containment and clean-up costs.

They add regulatory notices have also been issued, requiring full remediation, preventive maintenance, and necessary infrastructure upgrades to avoid future incidents.
