The new crossings in Cakaudrove and Bua have greatly improved safety, access to essential services, and economic opportunities for Vunisavisavi Village, especially benefiting students, farmers, and families in the area.
At the official opening of the Kacidavui Crossing along Nakobo Road in Cakaudrove, Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the $661,000 project marks a major step forward in improving rural access and safety.
Ro Filipe says the crossing is more than just a structure; it is a symbol of the government’s commitment to connecting rural communities, supporting economic activities, and protecting cultural sites.
Head of Nakobo District School, Peniana Pickering says students previously had to cross the river during rainy seasons, which was dangerous.
She says the new crossing brings great relief to the school and the wider community.
The Minister also opened the Namuavoivoi 2 Crossing in Bua costing $671,000, the Wairiki Crossing in Cakaudrove costing $707,000, and the Bagasau Crossing on Nakobo Road worth $840,000.
He says the developments will benefit people from the Tikina of Lekutu, Wainunu, Navakuru, Bagasau, Nakobo, and Vunisavisavi villages.
Ro Filipe acknowledged contractors Fair Deal and RPA, as well as the Commissioner Northern’s Office, for completing the projects on time.
The Minister also called on local communities to take care of the infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits, adding that the government remains committed to projects that transform lives and promote sustainable growth across Fiji.
