A new $7 note was unveiled last night by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to commemorate the achievements of the national 7s teams at the 2020 Olympic Games.

The note will have a gold colour on the front with a picture of the Fiji men's 7s team while the back of the note will be bronze with the photo of the Fijiana 7s team.

Bainimarama says in the midst of the pandemic and one of the struggling times for Fiji, the men's and women's 7s teams lifted the people's heart as they achieved greatness

The Prime Minister adds they hope to unveil a new note every four years.

The Governor and Chairman of the Reserve Bank of Fiji Board Ariff Ali says they are so proud of the athletes and the $7 banknote celebrates Team Fiji’s historic double medal achievement at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

He says there were several compelling reasons behind the decision to commission a special commemorative issue, because both teams and officials, had to endure extremely difficult circumstances leading up to the games, lockdowns, quarantine and having to be away from loved ones for months end.

Ali says while the nation has become accustomed to the heroics of the men’s 7s team who won back to back gold medals, the ladies exceeded expectations throughout the tournament and captivated attention with their gutsy performances. The new $7 note will be in circulation from 9am tomorrow.
