Neighbourhood markets have been set up in strategic locations in the greater Suva area where people can do their marketing rather than crowding up in the main markets.

New markets in Suva have been set up at My Suva Park along Queen Elizabeth Drive and UN Park in Victoria Parade.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says the impact of the Suva lockdown was felt in the Suva Market this morning when only 368 out of the 677 vendors turned up to sell their produce.

She says 309 vendors who are affected are from Naitasiri, Rewa, Tailevu, Serua/Namosi and Sigatoka.

Kumar says the Agro Marketing Authority is providing assistance by arranging wholesale buying of the produce from the farmers and vendors in the 6 provinces at the 3 borders of Sawani, Nausori Bridge and Delainavesi Bridge.

She says there are 84 vendors in the Nausori Market affected by the lockdown who are not able to sell from the market.

Kumar says all Nausori vendors who have been affected and cannot get across to Nausori Market are accommodated at the Narere Market, Hexagon Complex in Davuilevu and in Dilkusha along Princes Road.

She says Nasinu has two permanent vendors who are from Nausori and 16 casual vendors from Ra province.

Kumar says the permanent vendors will be selling from Nausori Main Market and the 16 casual vendors are being encouraged to sell their produce from Rakiraki Market.

She says appropriate arrangements are being made by Rakiraki Town Council to allow the casual vendors to sell from Rakiraki in order to comply with border restrictions.

Kumar says this is in consideration of the fact that not all vendors could be allocated at the main market.

She says vendors are to contact the respective Councils to occupy the areas identified for selling their produce.

The Minister wishes to advise the vendors and farmers to comply with locked down restrictions during COVID-19 and practice social distancing at all times and continue to support the measures taken by the government to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Kumar is also encouraging consumers to take advantage of the new neighbourhood markets to do their marketing.
