Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Nazhat Shameem Khan has been elected as a Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Khan is also the current President of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

She has been serving as the Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office at Geneva since 2014.

While commenting on her appointment, Khan has told fijivillage that she is honoured and especially pleased that Fiji, and the Asia/Pacific region will be represented at a senior level of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Khan says she is grateful to the Fiji Missions in New York and Geneva for supporting her candidacy and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Fiji for its faith in her.

She adds she is coming to the end of her term as President of the Human Rights Council and it has been a fruitful year of challenges overcome and new paths forged in the work of international human rights.

Khan also says she looks forward to what will be a new and invigorating career using the skills she has learnt as a former prosecutor, judge and diplomat.

Khan had worked for 16 years as a prosecutor in Fiji, and during that time was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions of Fiji in 1994.

In 1999, she was appointed Fiji’s first woman High Court Judge.
