A 22-year-old man residing in Verata, Nausori who allegedly stole tithe envelopes containing $2,340 cash from the Centenary Methodist Church has been remanded in custody by Suva Magistrate Seini Puamau.

Shain Zoher Razak is charged with one count of sacrilege.

A team of police officers patrolling in Suva on Sunday afternoon noticed that the accused was acting in a suspicious manner and upon searching, they found more than 10 envelopes containing money in it.

The man allegedly entered the church and took the envelopes from the church's offering box.

The court was told that the money was found in the envelopes in Razak's pocket and it has been identified by all the people who dropped the envelopes in the offering box.

Magistrate Puamau said Razak was just bailed for breaching the Failure to Comply with Public Health Act last Thursday.

She says releasing him on bail again will be a threat to society.

Razak was arrested during curfew hours on the 3rd of June at Stewart Street.

The case is adjourned to the 24th of June.
