Government is having discussions for Fiji to have a National ID system where Fijians will have only one number in all forms of identification.
This was confirmed by Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while he was updating Parliament on the introduction of Digital Fiji which is the digital government transformation program.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the National ID initiative will establish authoritative identity scheme.
He says this will prevent identity fraud and will bring accuracy in people’s data.
He says they are working with Singapore Cooperation Enterprise on this initiative.
Sayed-Khaiyum says banks can also know their customers through this.
He says they will also launch an online information portal for builders and developers.
Sayed-Khaiyum says by end of this year the Registrar of Companies System will be online.
Meanwhile, SODELPA MP, Adi Litia Qionibaravi then questioned the Attorney General whether this system is safe for Fiji.
