Serious concerns about the increasing risk of bush fires in Fiji has been raised by the National Fire Authority, following the tragic fire incident in Meigunyah, Nadi claiming the lives of 29-year-old Ziyad Ali, 25-year-old Zakiya Ali and their two-year-old son Hussein Ali.
NFA Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane highlights that bush fires are a growing concern in Fiji, especially during the dry season when strong winds, high temperatures and dry vegetation create the conditions for fires to spread quickly.
He raises concerns over the ongoing issue of cane field fires in the Western Division, warning that burning of rubbish, grass or sugarcane can escalate into large-scale disasters, particularly under dry and windy conditions.
Sowane also advises that while burglar grills are often installed to prevent theft, they can block quick escape during a fire, strongly recommending that homeowners design or install burglar grills with easy-to-open mechanisms from the inside to ensure safe and quick evacuation.
The National Fire Authority urges all members of the public to call on 910 immediately in any emergency, whether fire, rescue or hazardous incident.
Meanwhile, investigation continues in the Meigunyah, Nadi fire incident.
