The National Fire Authority is raising concerns after recording 100 property fires from January to 29th July this year, matching the total for the same period in 2024 — a worrying sign that fire incidents remain alarmingly frequent across Fiji.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane says despite continuous awareness efforts in schools, communities, and the media, the rate of fires has not declined, and complacency continues to be a major threat to lives and property.
NFA says over the weekend alone, seven structural fires and one road rescue were recorded across the country, including a devastating $8 million warehouse fire at the Gokal Group site in Toorak, Suva — the most severe incident.
A female firefighter was injured while responding to that blaze.
They say other weekend fire cases occurred in Lautoka, Nadi, Nausori, Nasinu, Verata (Tailevu), and Kinoya, with damages ranging between $20,000 and $90,000.
NFA says fortunately, most homes were either vacant or evacuated in time, and no fatalities were reported.
Sowane is urging the public to take basic fire precautions, such as safely storing flammable items, placing mosquito coils on non-flammable surfaces, and switching off power points when not in use.
He has stressed the need to call the toll-free 910 emergency number immediately at the first sign of fire, instead of trying to control it alone.
Sowane says the quicker they receive the call, the quicker they respond and give firefighters a fighting chance to save lives and properties.
NFA has also stressed that without greater vigilance, the country may see even more losses in the months ahead.
