More than 200 people sheltering at Andrews Primary School Nadi, Evacuation Centre

More than 200 people have taken refuge at Andrews Primary School in Nadi which has been opened as an evacuation centre as floodwaters have entered their homes.

Andrews Primary School Trustee, Ashfaaq Khan says Nadi is currently experiencing significant flooding, with water levels threatening to breach the banks of the Nawaka River.

Khan is pleading with the public or organisations if they can donate some cooked food for the evacuees, as the evacuation centre is currently housing many children.

Khan says the flooding has extended into the Tako Estate area, Korociri, Nawaka Tram Line, Nawakalevu and Nawijikuma where the evacuees are from.

He says some people have told them their homes are already under four feet of water.

The Trustee says in light of this crisis, they are urging the community to stay away from flooded areas to avoid the risk of leptospirosis, a serious illness that can arise from contact with contaminated water.

Khan adds it is crucial that adults act responsibly during this disaster, ensuring the safety of themselves and their families.
