A man who raped and sexually assaulted his maternal granddaughter in Nausori has been sentenced to 15 years and 8 months imprisonment by High Court Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza.

The incidents happened between 2016 to 2019.

It was heard in court that the man was financially supporting the girl after her mother had passed away in 2016 and she is currently attending a special school.

While sentencing the man, Justice Hamza says the girl would have been between 9 to 12 years of age at the time the offences were committed while the man was between 59 and 62 years of age.

Justice Hamza further says there was some degree of planning and premeditation on the man’s part and he had threatened the complainant with violence if she informed anyone about the incidents of abuse.

A non-parole period of 11 years and 8 months has been set.
