Police has arrested a 39-year-old man who is alleged to have stolen assorted items from a Nausori supermarket early this morning.

Chief Operations Officer ACP Abdul Khan says joint efforts between community members and the Eastern Division Police resulted in the quick arrest.

ACP Khan says before 2am, a 57 year old retiree while picking up his daughter and two of her workmates allegedly saw the suspect running from the supermarket with items believed to have been stolen.

He says they gave chase and were joined by an Eastern Division team who were on patrol after they were alerted of the alleged incident.

The suspect was arrested at around 2.30am and stolen items were recovered.

ACP Khan has applauded the efforts of the community members which led to the quick apprehension of the suspect.

He says such actions are commendable and the retiree has set a great example to his daughter and her colleagues.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
