Plans are underway to assist 53 children being tutored by retired teachers in Namulomulo Village in Nadi as part of 2025 Leadership Fiji’s Fellows project next year.
While speaking to fijivillage News, 2025 Cohort President and Natural Water of Viti Pte Ltd Industrial Relations and Administration Manager Leighton Turner says this project came about through one of the cohort participants' line of work.
Turner says the initiative stood out because it is driven by the community itself, where retired teachers in Namulomulo have taken the lead in supporting children’s education from kindergarten to secondary school by providing free tutoring sessions.
He says while the commitment of these retired teachers is inspiring, the learning space currently being used is a small and basic structure that cannot accommodate all the students, especially with growing interest from neighbouring villages.
Turner says Leadership Fiji aims to help expand and improve the facility to create a safer, more innovative learning space that can cater to more children and provide better conditions for tutoring.
He adds that the project reflects Leadership Fiji’s focus on empowering grassroots initiatives and supporting communities that take ownership of their own development.
2025 Cohort member and Housing Authority Senior Corporate Governance and Insurance Executive Bikashni Chand says they will be renovating and doing some extension work.
She says they will also construct a ramp for handicapped children who will be coming for their tuition in the evenings and also provide sanitation products for the children.
