The Land Transport Authority in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other key partners is launching the National Road Safety Week next Monday at the Miss Hibiscus Festival in Suva which is designed to promote road safety and reduce fatalities across Fiji.

According to statistics, as of August 27, 2024, road fatalities have dropped from 62 to 38 compared to the same period last year, but LTA Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa stresses that safety remains a shared responsibility.

Rokosawa says the campaign focuses on responsible driving behaviour, urging drivers to follow speed limits, avoid distractions like mobile phones and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He reminded drivers to wear seatbelts, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and remain cautious of pedestrians and cyclists.

The acting CEO is also encouraging passengers to wear seatbelts and assist drivers by minimising distractions and are advised to use designated crossings, stay alert and wear visible clothing, especially at night.

He adds that throughout the week, a range of activities will engage the public, including road safety quizzes, giveaways, poetry readings and an art exhibition featuring student submissions focused on road safety.

National Road Safety Week will also extend to the Vodafone Friendly North Festival in Labasa from September 2-6, with the LTA offering after-hours services, such as license renewals and vehicle transfers, at both festivals.

Meanwhile, the Miss Hibiscus festival starts at the Suva Foreshore from 12pm today, and the official parade will be held from 4pm this afternoon.

The parade will be held from the Suva Flea Market to the Suva Foreshore.
