Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar says some municipal councils have not priced garbage collection rates accurately and there is a need to change the price for this service.
She says there is a lot of costs involved to provide this service but their collection is not sufficient to meet the total cost.
Kumar says some municipalities are charging $27.50 in garbage collection fees for the whole year but the same residents are paying more than $40 for entertainment every month.
Kumar says people are not treating garbage collection as an essential service and it should be rightly priced.
The Minister adds this is why every municipal council needs to have the right people.
