The Highlanders are fearful that captain James Lentjes could be sidelined for the rest of the 2020 season, having broken his leg in last night's 28-22 defeat to the Rebels in Dunedin.

The 29-year-old was taken off the field in a stretcher in last night's loss.

The loose forward's injury saw his left ankle and foot visibly bent out of place and he was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Speaking to media after the loss, coach Aaron Mauger conceded that the Highlanders could be without Lentjes for the rest of their campaign.

Mauger says Lentjes had some bad luck over the years with injuries and the team is devastated about the news.

The loss of Lentjes will only add to the Highlanders' struggles, currently bottom of the New Zealand Super Rugby conference with one win from their opening four matches.

In other Super Rugby results, the Waratahs defeated the Lions 29-17.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will take on the Sunwolves at 3.45 pm today, the Reds will face the Lions at 8.15 tonight, the Stormers will play the Blues at 1.05 am tomorrow while the Jaguares will take on the Bulls at 3.15 am tomorrow.
