The high cost of transportation from Cikobia Island to the main land has caused the relocation of many villagers.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Chairman of the Delainamasi Cooperative in Cikobia, Josaia Wasasala says villagers also face difficulties in supporting their children’s education while living on the island, which has pushed families to move to the mainland in search of better opportunities.
Wasasala says in the village of Vatulele in Cikobia Island, only one family remains, while the rest have moved to the Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.
The chairman also raised concern about why bus fare subsidies are only provided to those using buses, while no such assistance is given to those who rely on vessels as their mode of transport.
We have sent questions to the iTaukei Affairs, and they are yet to respond.
