Government MP Rohit Ritesh Sharma who is charged with Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm has been released on bail.

The 41-year-old was produced in the Nasinu Magistrates Court earlier today.

The prosecution had no objection to bail as Sharma's wife wants to continue to have contact with her husband.

Sharma is to report to the Nakasi Police Station every Sunday.

Magistrate Sufia Hamza told the defence lawyer, Jiten Reddy that she did not care what the accused does for a living when the defence asked that Sharma be allowed to report to the Nakasi Police Station every Sunday and not Saturday as he was an MP and at times had meetings to attend on Saturdays.

Magistrate Hamza has also issued an interim restraining order and ordered him to surrender his travel documents immediately.

Sharma has also been told not to reoffend or interfere with prosecution witnesses.

Sharma allegedly assaulted his 35-year-old wife last Sunday during a heated argument in Davuilevu Housing.

The case will be called on the 13th of October for plea.

Defence lawyer expected to file submission for withdrawal of the charge

There are revelations today that the wife of Government MP, Rohit Ritesh Sharma had given her withdrawal statement to Nakasi Police within 30 minutes of her assault complaint against her husband yesterday.

However the withdrawal statement was not accepted since Police have a No Drop Policy for such cases and they have to proceed with the case.

Sharma’s lawyer, Jiten Reddy says since the withdrawal statement was made by the wife, they will make a submission to the DPP’s Office as it was a misunderstanding between Sharma and his wife.

Reddy says they will make the submission for reconsideration and for the charge to be withdrawn against Sharma.

Police have confirmed to Fijivillage that since Sharma has been officially charged and the case file has been processed, they cannot comment any further.
