French Ambassador to Fiji, Francois Xavier Leger has thanked Fiji and the Pacific Island countries for their support of the international community's action against Russia.

While speaking during the 233rd Anniversary of Bastille Day, the National Day of France, Leger says unfortunately, the war could last a long time and we will have to stand together to defend the international law and the human rights and to address the tragic consequences of the Ukrainian invasion on the economy and food security.

The Ambassador says the European Union, which France is the current President of, are working to alleviate the economic impact.

He further says we are still facing the health crisis caused by COVID-19 and France is a leading country in the COVAX facility.

He says they handed over 9,600 doses of the Moderna vaccine to the Ministry of Health last week and France has donated over 120 million doses of the vaccine worldwide since April 2020.

Leger also says they share the South Pacific's fight against climate change because they share the constant message of committed international influence and everyone is aware of the Paris Agreement.

He adds they also share the fight against climate change because of French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna.

Speaking on behalf of the Fijian Government, the Chief of Protocol said Fiji has learnt and benefitted a lot from France in all areas of corporation and they look forward to a more strengthened partnership in the many good years to come.

They say France will always be an important friend and partner for Fiji.

Also in attendance for the celebration were the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere,  Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka, People's Alliance Leader, Sitiveni Rabuka and Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Henry Puna.
