A nationwide teacher training has been launched today to prepare educators across Fiji for the 2026 rollout of a comprehensive election's curriculum.
The training is being conducted by the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
During the opening, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa has highlighted that by 2026, 100 percent of secondary schools teaching Year 9 and 10 Social Science will be equipped to deliver democracy education as part of the curriculum.
She notes that through these sessions, the FEO will engage with 112 schools, following the August pilot which covered 67 schools.
Mataiciwa emphasizes the goal is to ensure that every teacher leaves the workshop empowered, confident, and ready to teach the new content.
She says the programme is supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the Voter Outreach for Transparent Elections (VOTE) Fiji Project under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
She also adds that this reflects strong international collaboration in strengthening Fiji’s democratic processes.
The FEO says implementation workshops will be held in Suva, Lautoka, Rakiraki, and Savusavu over the coming weeks.
