Fijian soldiers serving as peacekeepers in the Middle East are confirmed to be safe and in high spirits, despite ongoing tensions and continuous missile exchanges between Israel and Iran.
This was shared by Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, to fijivillage News following a Cabinet meeting yesterday.
Minister Tikoduadua was in Israel as part of a six-week tour of the Middle East, where he met with Fijian peacekeeping soldiers.
Reports from the region indicate that since June 13, Israel has carried out extensive strikes on Iran’s military infrastructure and in response, Iranian missiles have penetrated Israel's defense systems, while the United States has launched attacks on Tehran’s nuclear facilities.
In a rapid escalation of events over a 24-hour period beginning Monday, a US air base came under attack, the White House brokered a temporary ceasefire between Iran and Israel, and the fragile agreement nearly collapsed.
On Saturday night, the US launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites and by Tuesday morning, US President Donald Trump had departed Washington for another overseas trip.
