Fijian designers highlight sustainability and culture through Coconique boutique

Fijian fashion designer Anton Conway-Wye and his colleagues are putting sustainability, tradition, and accessibility at the heart of local fashion through their newly launched Coconique Boutique in Suva.

While speaking to fijivillage News at the grand opening of the boutique, Wye says one example is how off-cut fabrics are given to women in villages to make rugs, which he says is their sustainable side.

Coconique Boutique is a collaboration of seven designers, many of whom are embracing modern silhouettes infused with traditional Fijian prints, and Wye is confident that very soon these designers will be on international runways.

When asked about what motivated him and his colleagues to come up with the idea for the boutique, Wye says the idea was born during a trip to Australia through a five-week EU-supported course.

He says most local designers could not afford boutique spaces, so Coconique Boutique was created as a shared platform for designers across Fiji to showcase their work physically—not just online.

While speaking during the opening of the boutique, European Union Ambassador to Fiji and for the Pacific Barbara Plinkert praised the launch of a new designer boutique in Suva and says this is a vibrant celebration of Fijian fashion, culture, and international cooperation.

Plinkert says the boutique was more than a retail space, as it is a platform where creativity, tradition, and innovation come together.

While referencing Europe’s deep-rooted fashion tradition, from Paris to Milan and Barcelona, Plinkert says it was exciting to witness Fijian fashion thrive on its own terms.

She says Fijian designers are not just creating garments, they are telling stories of who they are and where they come from, and adds that the boutique is a space where culture is not only preserved, but lived and worn.

Plinkert congratulated the designers involved, calling them artists, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors, and expressed hope that this space becomes a permanent platform for local talent.

She says this is what was missing in Suva, a space to showcase the incredible talent we see each year at Fiji Fashion Week, now accessible to all.
