The Fiji women’s basketball team made a dominant start to their FIBA Melanesian Cup campaign, defeating the Solomon Islands 60-34 in Honiara last night.

Making her senior debut, the youngest squad member 16 year-old Makaefa Savu says teamwork was the key to their victory.

She says they played as one unit and are proud of the result.

The Rotuman centre, who recently transitioned from age-grade to senior competition, says playing at this level is a big step up but she’s proud to have matched the intensity of her teammates.

Savu is also one of two recipients of the Hoops Leadership and Confidence Scholarship.

Fiji will now face Papua New Guinea at 6.30 tonight.

Meanwhile, the men’s team lost to the Solomon Islands 70-67 in their first match and they lost again to PNG 63-56 in their second match.
