The Fiji Men’s 7s team beat Argentina 26-14 in the Tokyo Olympics semi-final and are now on the verge of creating history by winning back to back gold medals in rugby in the Olympics.

Jerry Tuwai will also become the first Fijian and 7s rugby player to win back to back gold medals.

It was a tough encounter for our team as a determined Argentina side were keeping Fiji at bay.

It was rookie Sireli Maqala who scored Fiji’s first try after Fiji had kept possession for a number of phases.

Meli Derenalagi extended Fiji’s lead with our second try after winning possession at the break down and with the conversion successful, Fiji led 12-0.

Argentina kept trying and scored two quick tries to lead 14-12 at half time.

Argentina were threatening to extend their lead in the second half but a brutal tackle by Asaeli Tuivuaka gave Fiji an advantage as Jiuta Wainiqolo raced away to score Fiji’s third try and with the successful conversion Fiji led 19-14.

Semi Radradra sealed the win for Fiji after beating a couple of defenders to race away for the try.

Fiji will now play New Zealand in the final after New Zealand beat Great Britain 29-7. Fiji had beaten New Zealand in the quarter-final of the 2016 Olympics and had also beaten them twice in the Oceania 7s last month.

The final will be played at 9 tonight.
