Last night was a night to remember for the people of China and Chinese descendants in Fiji, as they joined the people of Fiji in celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 50th anniversary of China–Fiji diplomatic relations at Albert Park.

A drone show lit up the Suva sky to make the celebration more memorable.

The aerial display includes stunning formations such as the Fijian flag, a rugby player, and a panda drinking kava, all performed above the sea.

Speaking at the event, Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad says that Fiji and the People’s Republic of China formally established relations 50 years ago, though people of Chinese descent have lived in Fiji for more than 150 years.

Professor Prasad highlighted that the partnership is built on mutual respect, sovereignty, and cooperation, and has been strengthened through high-level visits, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Fiji in 2014 and the Fijian Prime Minister’s reciprocal visit to China.

He also acknowledged China’s support through socio-economic projects, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Global Development Initiative, which have advanced infrastructure, boosted productivity, created economic opportunities, and improved public services such as roads, hospitals, and schools.

He added that this relationship continues to transform the lives of Fijians and promote sustainable development.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian says the 50th anniversary of Fiji–China relations was also celebrated in Beijing, marking China’s rise as a global economic and technological leader and Fiji’s progress since independence.

Ambassador Jian also emphasized that the partnership has been strengthened through over 20 completed infrastructure projects, highlighting mutual respect and cooperation.

He further noted that both nations reaffirmed their commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and expanding cultural and economic exchanges.

Also present at the event were the Speaker of Parliament Filimoni Jitoko,Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu, Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh, Assistant Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel, and Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Sakiusa Tubuna.
