Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka says Fiji has recovered 71% of our tourist numbers since the re-opening of the borders.

While speaking at the Tanoa Hotel Group Appreciation Event, Gavoka says last month Fiji received more tourists when compared to January 2019.

He says 2019 is always the benchmark because we cannot compare the numbers to 2020, 2021 and 2022 as they were pandemic years.

Gavoka also stated that the tourism industry now contributes 40% to Gross Domestic Product and it may even get better and higher than that.

The Minister says while he was meeting with the travel agents in Nadi, they mentioned that even though the recovery was 71%, the yield was much greater.

He says Fiji is getting quality guests who are paying rates that are higher than what we use to see in the past which means that Fiji is on a roll.

Gavoka has also given assurance that the Coalition Government stands ready to support the private sector in their journey to success.

He says the government’s mission is to strengthen economy through sustainable growth and the ultimate objective of improving the lives of all Fijian citizens.
