The Fiji delegation to the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) will be making their position very clear at the meeting about the Pacific Island countries including Fiji ought to have a much more accessible and very clear system mechanism in achieving the finances that we need in terms of Loss and Damage Fund.

This was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad who will be leading the Fiji delegation that was endorsed by Cabinet.

Professor Prasad says they had a very successful meeting with the President of the World Bank and the World Bank will act as the financial intermediary in terms of how the Loss and Damage Fund is going to be made available to countries such as the Pacific.

He says it is going to be a very important meeting and a lot of the discussions at the meeting will be about climate financing and also about the Loss and Damage Fund.

He says the Ministry of Climate Change, led by Permanent Secretary Sivendra Michael is already working on their preparations for COP29 and the Fiji delegation want to be thoroughly prepared.

Professor Prasad says the technical working group, made up of different ministries is already doing its work and before they leave Fiji with a well-prepared delegation, they want to be very clear about Fiji's position and their own contributions in different meetings at COP29.

COP29 will focus on several thematic areas including; climate finance, carbon markets, mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and oceans, among others.

The COP29 meeting will be held from the 11th to the 22nd of November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
