Fiji and Tonga have prioritized collaboration in tourism, aviation links, attracting foreign investment, and improving worker mobility.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, met with Tonga’s Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Kapelieli Lanumata, to strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation between the two Pacific nations.
Both ministers acknowledged the need for deeper economic engagement between Fiji and Tonga, given the long-standing trade flows between their countries.
They discussed avenues for enhancing private-sector collaboration, revisiting trade frameworks such as PICTA, and exploring the potential for bilateral agreements that better reflect national interests and emerging economic opportunities.
They agreed that more reliable transportation links and investment in infrastructure — such as inland ports and tourism properties — would help unlock economic potential and improve investor confidence.
Deputy Prime Minister Kamikamica also encouraged Tonga to address overfishing and ensure sustainable fisheries development in the Pacific.
The meeting also emphasised the importance of practical cooperation, particularly between the countries’ private sectors and government institutions.
