Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights that will be celebrated next Tuesday, continues to shine as a symbol of unity and cultural harmony in Fiji’s proudly multiracial society.
This year’s FMF Diwali Thali competition, organised by Navtarang and Radio Sargam at 231 Waimanu Road in Suva, featured a heartwarming example of interfaith participation, as two Muslim women took part, showcasing both their culinary talent and respect for cultural diversity.
Held as part of broader Diwali festivities in Suva, the competition invited participants to prepare and present festive platters filled with a variety of sweets and savouries.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Sugra Habib from Makoi, who claimed second prize and won $300, says she takes part in this competition every year.
She says that although she is Muslim, she has many hindu friends, and they often celebrate festivals together.
The 70-year-old lives alone, as her children now have their own families, but says this doesn’t stop her from doing what she’s passionate about.
Farzana Nisha, who received $200 for third place, says this was her first time entering the competition, and she was thrilled to have won a prize.
The 24-year-old says she learned how to make sweets from her mother while she was still in primary school and is very passionate about this hobby.
Among the many colourful and creative entries, the participation of the two Muslim women stood out, not just for their beautifully arranged thalis, but for what their involvement represented.
Fiji’s multicultural society is clearly seen during national celebrations, and whether it’s Diwali, Eid, or Christmas, it’s common for families and friends of all backgrounds to celebrate together.
