Evicted Veiraisi residents ask do they not matter

Evicted Veiraisi residents ask do they not matter

Veiraisi Settlement resident Inise Rinasau

It is now into the second week of the dismantling of our houses and we have not seen any help, visit or official from the government of the day, the very same ones that we voted into power from the beginning, do we not matter.

This was highlighted by Veiraisi Settlement resident Inise Rinasau whose house was dismantled as they try and figure out where they are going to sleep.

Rinasau says their children have not gone to school this week because of the uncertainty of things happening around them.

She says that they have taken their belongings as well as three other households to their uncle’s home close by and have also asked if the children can sleep there at night.

She says the older boys and men will have to make do with a tarpaulin and sleep out in the open to guard their roofing iron and timber.

Rinasau adds that she and her husband have not been working for the last two weeks so even if they had a place to go, they cannot afford it.

As the evicted families from Veiraisi Settlement in Nadera call for the government to assist, FijiFirst General Secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there are many people like the residents of Veiraisi Settlement, and they can apply to the Public Rental Board for housing.

Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to us in the FijiFirst press conference when Legend FM News questioned him if the Government will assist these families because they have said they have nowhere else to go.
