Death penalty will not solve the drug issues in Fiji - PM Rabuka

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

Bringing back the death penalty will not solve the drug issues in Fiji.

Those were the words of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka while speaking to fijivillage News in Parliament today.

Rabuka says the death penalty may be a deterrent, but it will not solve the drug issues.

When asked if he has discussed the death penalty comment made by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya, who proposed to bring back the death penalty for people who bring large quantities of drugs to Fiji, Rabuka says he will be having a discussion with Tabuya soon on that issue.

He says he is still waiting to receive a formal complaint about Tabuya’s comments, especially from the General Secretary of the Methodist Church of Fiji, so he can act upon it.

When asked if he finds the comment by Tabuya appropriate, he says that it has not been cleared by the cabinet.
