It was a special reunion between baby Ayat Aisha Ali and one of the first responders who helped in the delivery of the baby as Tropical Cyclone Ana wreaked havoc in Fiji.

Ayat is also known as Ana to her family to signify her arrival into this world.

Police Constable Levitu Salauca was deployed to the Tavua Muslim School evacuation centre when she received word that Ayat’s mother Sinu Bibi needed urgent assistance.

The 24-year-old says the road towards Kavuli was flooded so they asked a villager to help them get to Bibi.

She says three nurses had delivered baby Ayat but they had to act quickly to get both the mum and Ayat to a hospital as they needed further medical attention.

Officials from NDMO and National Fire Authority were also present to assist with the evacuation efforts.

Salauca says she was overwhelmed with a sense of pride and joy in realising how rewarding the life of service can be.

She says she was blessed to be in the middle of such a scenario and to see the joy a newborn brings to the parents is just priceless.
