Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Director Ashwin Raj

The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has reported three well known local Tiktokers to the Online Safety Commission and the Police Cyber Crime Unit, and they are calling for an urgent investigation.

We have sent questions to the Online Safety Commission and Police. They are yet to respond.

The complaints filed are against a woman from Lautoka and two men from Nausori and Labasa.

The Commission says one TikToker is alleged to have taken photos of a child who was waiting with her parents inside a police station to file a complaint, and then exposed the child on Tiktok.

It further says the allegations include vulgar language, and making misogynistic and discriminatory statements against women and children.

Commission Director Ashwin Raj says social media has become the space for an eye for an eye.

He adds that people should conduct themselves with dignity and decorum on social media.

Raj says it is incumbent on statutory bodies to not make the public run around and there needs to be greater coordination between various institutions to assist the public. Raj says the public should not be simply turned away after being told to give evidence particularly if they do not have resources or the technical know how to access the platforms.

He adds it is imperative that these institutions conduct their own independent investigation and independently verify the information and afford remedy to the aggrieved.

Meanwhile, Anis Khatoon Gwaizda was charged with two counts of causing harm by Posting Electronic Communication, contrary to section 24(1) and (2) (a) of the Online Safety Act, 2018, and produced in court on Tuesday.

She has also been ordered to not leave the country.

Police say the woman recently came to Fiji from Australia.
