Clean-up campaign in the Central Division from next Monday to Friday

The Ministry for Disaster Management will be holding a one-week clean-up campaign in the Central Division from next Monday to Friday, and people are being urged to come out in numbers to be part of this initiative in preparation for the 2022/2023 cyclone season.

Minister for Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu says this initiative will target six sites within the Central Division namely Wailea, Nadonumai, Navua Town, Waidamudamu, Naduru Road in Nausori, and Korovou Town in Tailevu.

He says in recent years, incidents of flooding in many rural and flooded-prone areas have been the result of poor waste disposal by communities.

Seruiratu says through this exercise, they hope to educate communities and also raise awareness on the importance of ensuring the proper disposable of waste at homes and respective communities.

He adds during this campaign, waste bins will be positioned at located sites and on the day of collection, officials will be on the ground, not only to raise awareness in communities on proper waste disposal but they will also use the opportunity to educate the public on the importance of early preparedness.

The Minister says people can play their part by clearing their drainage systems at home, disposing of waste properly and trimming tree branches around their compound.

He says while they continue to advocate the importance of early preparedness, as responsible citizens, we must also take the necessary actions to safeguard our families, livestock and properties from such events.
