A desire to represent Samoa is part of the reason, All Blacks star Ardie Savea is considering a code switch to rugby league.

The Hurricanes loose forward created headlines when he said he was considering a switch to the NRL having been inspired by former teammate Sonny Bill Williams.

Savea doubled down on those comments while appearing on the Staf Chat podcast.

The 26-year-old says the opportunity to represent Samoa made the 13-man game more appealing.

Savea says a big part of why he wanted to go to league was because he could play for Samoa because of the rules.

He says it's how proud the Samoan people are and how much they have given to rugby internationally is a reason why he would like to represent his heritage.

The Hurricanes will take on the Rebels at 6.05pm Friday.
